Manikaran is a crater on (951) Gaspra , an asteroid of the inner main belt from the flora - family .

The mean diameter of the crater is around 500 meters. It is located near the larger Spa crater in the Yeates Regio at 62 ° North and 155 ° West.

(951) Gaspra was the first asteroid to be visited by a space probe . On the way to Jupiter in 1991 , Galileo passed the asteroid at a distance of only 1,600 kilometers and was able to take detailed images of 80 percent of the surface.

designation

The crater was named after the spa town of Manikaran in 1994 . Manikaran is located in the Parvati Valley in the Kullu district in the north of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and is known for its thermal springs . Since the asteroid (951) Gaspra was named after a health resort, the Haspra resort on the Crimean peninsula , the craters on its surface are named after well-known health resorts.
