Walter M. Simonds

Walter M. Simonds (born January 31, 1911 , † December 11, 1992 ) was an American production designer and art director .

Life

Simonds began his career on the film staff in 1955 as art director on Delbert Mann's drama Marty . In 1956 he was nominated for the Oscar in the category Best Production Design, together with Ted Haworth and Robert Priestley , but that year the award went to the literary film The Tattooed Rose by director Daniel Mann . Simonds had also worked for television at the beginning of his career, but after his Oscar nomination he worked mainly for film; His other films include the Elvis Presley vehicles Flammender Stern and Frankie and Johnny as well as the John Wayne films The Green Devils , Vultures Know No Mercy and McQ strikes . In the early to mid-1970s he worked on a number of television films, his last engagement was in 1976 with the action comedy The Craziest Rally in the World .
