Robert Priestley

Robert Willerton Priestley (born June 12, 1901 in Manhattan , New York City , New York , † November 27, 1986 in San Diego , California ) was an American art director and production designer who won two Oscar for best production design and one was nominated again for this Oscar.

Life

Priestley began his career as an art director and production designer in the Hollywood film industry in 1936 for the film Tell Your Children and worked on the stage equipment for around 110 films and television series until 1968 .

At the Academy Awards in 1956 , he won both the Oscar for best production design in a color film and was also nominated at this award for an Oscar for best production design in a black and white film. The Oscar he won along with William Flannery and jo mielziner for by Joshua Logan staged melodrama Picnic (1955) with William Holden , Kim Novak and Betty Field in the lead roles . He received the Oscar nomination together with Ted Haworth and Walter M. Simonds for the film drama Marty (1955) by Delbert Mann with the actors Ernest Borgnine , Betsy Blair and Esther Minciotti .

He won his second Oscar for best production design in 1958 with Haworth for Sayonara (1957), directed by Joshua Logan based on the novel by James A. Michener with Marlon Brando , Patricia Owen and Red Buttons .
