Mannheim painter
As Mannheim painter , a painter of vases will Attic - red-figure style called. He was active between 460 and 440 BC. BC, in classical times .
The Mannheim painter got his emergency name from the most important researcher of Attic vase painting , John D. Beazley . His name vase found in Orvieto is now in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim (inventory number 61). It is like all surviving works of the painter a Oinochoe which, like almost all decorated by him vessels from that of Adrienne Lezzi-Misty as M-pottery was manufactured named ceramist. The "M" in the potter's emergency name stands for Mannheim painters . The oinochoes are mainly pitchers of the Attic type VII , which the M-potter interpreted in a completely new way and the Mannheim painter decorated in a new way. It showed a wide range of topics, even if the comparatively small vase shape did not offer much space. In addition to a few figures, floral elements in the handle zone are of particular importance. It shows farewell scenes, such as warriors' farewells , but also other warrior scenes, Amazons , maenads , libation scenes and once the Persian king with the queen and a servant. With his high-quality drawings, he follows the tradition of Polygnotus , which he surpasses with his fine painting style. All works were found in Italy, mostly in Etruscan graves, if their origin is known today . Today around 15 to 20 vases have been preserved that were assigned to the painter, his workshop or his immediate environment. The Mannheim painter was, like the M-Potter for the S-Potter , the teacher of the even more important Schuwalow painter . Both continued the workshop tradition of their predecessors.
