The mother of the underage sisters Laurel and Amanda has passed away. The girls flee their adoptive parents, live on theft and spend the night in random places. When 16-year-old Laurel becomes pregnant, the girls feel overwhelmed. They kidnap the saleswoman Elaine, who works in a baby clothing store, with whom they hide in a remote house. They later make friends with the woman they consider family members.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was a "wonderful fantasy about family life" and that there was something magical about it. Each of the main characters is lonely looking for a place where they belong. The performances of the three main actresses are strong, especially the "perfect" game by Scarlett Johansson, which is a "true discovery".
