history

In 1897 the association was founded under the name Mansfield Wesleyans , after Wesleyan Church in Mansfield. In 1910 it was renamed Mansfield Town and moved to the Field Mill Stadium, one of the oldest football stadiums in the world.

After several attempts, the club was included in the Football League for the 1931/32 season, with division four winning the 1974/75 season and the associated promotion to the third division, the club celebrated one of its greatest successes, including the Winning the Freight Rover Trophy 1987 counts. The final of this Cup was Mansfield's only game at London's Wembley Stadium , beating Bristol City 5-4 on penalties. In the 1977/78 season, the club was even able to play second-rate for the only year in its history, but the direct relegation could not be avoided.

In 1991 he was relegated back to the fourth division, and in 2002 he was able to return to the third highest English division with promotion to Division Two , since the season could only be finished as 23rd, Mansfield had to go into gear immediately compete in Division Three. At the end of the 2007/08 season, another relegation ensured that Mansfield Town had to compete in the fifth-rate Conference National for the first time after 77 years of uninterrupted membership in the Football League .

After five years in the fifth division, the club won the championship in the Conference National in the 2012/13 season and thus managed to return to the Football League.
