Mansun was an English Britpop band that formed in 1995 in Chester , Cheshire . They released three albums until their separation in 2002 and combined classic Britpop with progressive rock , glam rock and electronic music in their songs .
Band history
Foundation and naming
Mansun was founded in 1995 by Paul Draper (vocals, guitar), Dominic Chad (guitar), Stove King (bass) and Andie Rathbone (drums). Paul Draper wrote his first texts and poems at the age of 13. Naked Twister and She Makes My Nose Bleed are from this time. After dropping out of convent school and kicking him out of art college, he started working for a graphic design company in Chester , where he met Stove King. On weekends they frequented the Fat Cat Pub, where Chad worked. The three became friends and soon decided to start a band.
Originally, the four wanted to call themselves "Gray Lantern" because the name was somewhat similar to Pink Floyd and Green Lantern . Ultimately, after a song title by The Verve that appeared as the B-side on the single All in the Mind and The Verve EP , A Man Called Sun was chosen as the band name. This in turn was shortened to the final "Mansun" to avoid a possible name conflict with the band A Man Called Adam .
Career from 1997 to 2001
Her first single, Take It Easy Chicken , released on her own label "Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi-Records", made it into the rotation of various English radio stations. After a few singles and EPs , the debut Attack of the Gray Lantern was released in 1997 , pushing Blur 's The Great Escape from the top of the UK chart.
On the second album Six , Mansun moved away from the very British pop debut and took a big step towards progressive rock . The whole album follows one on the English television series Dr. Who based concept. In addition, the album consists of two different parts, separated by an intermediate piece, and the songs partly exceed the 7-minute mark.
The third album, Little Kix , took a completely different direction: here a mixture of pop music with soul influences prevails . Despite some hit singles Mansun could not repeat the success of the debut with the last two albums. The British music scene had long since grown fond of other and new trends .
Last recordings and tape resolution
In 2002 Mansun began recording their fourth album. Even before the final completion, however, they announced their separation. The box set Kleptomania was released posthumously in 2004 , which contains previously unreleased pieces, B-sides , demos and live recordings on three CDs . With the Shot by Both Sides from Magazine recorded during the Peel Sessions , it also includes the only recording of a cover version of Mansun. In 2006, Legacy: The Best of Mansun , a singles compilation, was released that contained a download link for the previously unreleased track South of the Painted Hall . The limited edition of the best-of album was also accompanied by a DVD with documentaries, live excerpts and all of the band's videos.
Later activities
Paul Draper worked with various artists after the end of Mansun. With Skin he wrote the songs Alone in My Room , She's On , Just Let the Sun and Take Me On , which were released on their second solo album 'Fake Chemical Taste' in 2006. He can also be heard as a guitarist on all four songs. He co-produced 'Alone in My Room'. In 2006 he recorded the song Exceeder with the Dutch DJ Mason . He has worked as a producer for British singer Catherine Anne Davies and British band You Animals . With the British band The Joy Formidable he recorded the song Greyhounds in the Slips in 2009 . In January 2009 Paul Draper performed live for the first time since the end of Mansun: The British band My Vitriol gave the last concert before the concert hall was demolished at the London Astoria . With Draper as a guest they played the Mansun song Wide Open Space .
