The Joy Formidable is a three-piece British rock band hailing from north Wales and now based in London , England . Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar) and Rhydian Dafydd (vocals, bass) originally played together in the new wave / post-punk band Sidecar Kisses before the band split up. In 2007 the band re-formed under the name The Joy Formidable , with Justin Stahley on drums. Their music is described as "original, epic grunge rock à la The Breeders , Arcade Fire and Yeah Yeah Yeahs ".

Band history

Foundation and album A Balloon Called Moaning

After their founding in 2007 and the release of "Cradle" as download in July 2008, the band released their debut single "Austere" on CD on August 18, 2008. The Times described it as "dreamy indie pop". “Austere” was followed by a second single, a limited edition of “Cradle” on CD. The mini-album A Balloon Called Moaning with eight tracks was initially only released in Japan in December 2008 and only in February 2009 as a CD and as a (shortened) free download version. To promote the record, the band performed at several festivals, including the Latitude Festival and the Reading Festival , during which time Stahley was replaced by Matthew Thomas on drums. The third single "Whirring" came out in May 2009. At the end of 2009 the free single "Greyhounds in the Slips" (only available digitally) was released, which was produced by the former Mansun frontman Paul Draper . A limited live album called First You Have To Get Mad was released on November 30, 2009. The band toured the UK with Editors and Passion Pit, among others .

Regular debut album

The band's sixth single, "Popinjay," was released on February 21, 2010 on iTunes . On April 5, the single was released on CD, which precedes the so far unnamed first regular album. To promote the single and album, the band has been on a tour of the UK with 18 concert dates since March 14, 2010.
