Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza

Manuel María del Pilar Eduardo de Gorostiza y Cepeda (born October 13, 1789 in Veracruz , ( Mexico ), † October 23, 1851 in Tacubaya , today Mexico City ) was a Spanish-Mexican comedy poet and diplomat .

His father Pedro Fernández de Gorostiza was the Spanish governor of Veracruz . Gorostiza first made a name for himself through his comedies Indulgencia para todos (Madrid 1813), Las costumbres de antaño (Madrid 1819) and Don Dieguito (Madrid 1820), which were performed with great acclaim in Madrid in 1815 .

As a supporter of the Pronunciamiento of 1820 for the constitution of Cádiz of 1812, he had to flee to England like many other of his compatriots after the French invasion of Spain and the restoration of 1823, from where he worked with great zeal for the recognition of Mexico's independence on the part of the European courts.

Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza was Mexico's first ambassador to the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium. During his tenure in the Netherlands on June 15, 1827, the governments of the Netherlands and Mexico signed the first Treaty of Friendship, Trade and the Law of the Sea.

Soon afterwards he became the Mexican ambassador in London, later in Paris, where he concluded the trade and alliance treaty with the French government. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous comedy : Contigo pan y cebolla (1833), 1833 (Imprenta de Repullés), from which Eugène Scribe took the idea for his Vaudeville Une chaumière et son coeur . After returning to his homeland, G. became a State Councilor and director of the Mexico City Theater. A selection of his dramatic writings was published in 2 volumes (Brussels 1825) and in the Teatro moderno espanol (Madrid 1836–1838, 4 volumes). The aim of his mission in Washington was to find a peaceful settlement for the conflict over Texas .
