Manuel de Sumaya
Manuel de Sumaya or Zumaya (baptized January 14, 1680 in Mexico City , † December 21, 1755 in Oaxaca de Juárez ) was a Mexican conductor and composer.
Life
Manuel de Sumaya received his training as a choirboy at the Cathedral of Mexico City , which was under the direction of Antonio de Salazar (1650-1715). De Sumaya worked there first as an organist and between 1713 and 1738 as Kapellmeister, after which he worked in the same function at the chapel of the cathedral of Oaxaca de Juárez.
In addition to church music that had its roots in the music of the Renaissance as well as that of the Baroque, including numerous lamenti , motets , Magnificat , Miserere and Villancicos , he composed with El Rodrigo (1708), El Zeleuco (1710) and La Partenope (1711) the first Mexican operas .
The opera La Partenope premiered on May 1, 1711 in Mexico City .
