The Suco Maquili is located in the southeast of Ataurus. In the west lies the Suco Macadade , in the northeast Vila Maumeta and in the north Beloi . Cape Ponta Eromauco forms the southernmost tip of the island in Suco . Before the 2015 territorial reform, Maquili had an area of 14.65 km². Now there are 14.52 km². The south of Vila Maumeta was added to Maquili, as well as a strip of land in the west to Macadade. For this, areas in the southwest went to Macadade.
In the village of Mau-Meta ( Maumeta ), in the southwest of the Sucos, a market is held on Fridays, where fish, goats, vegetables and chickens are sold. In Macelihu ( Mausilhu ), the center of Maquili on the coast, there is the primary school of sucos , the Escola Primaria Macelihu . There is also a secondary school and a helipad for emergencies. A little further north are the places Fatulela and Maulucu , in the northwest Mau-Laku ( Maulako ). A paved road connects Mau-Meta with Biqueli in the north of the island. Off the coast is the Manta Cove dive site .
The four Aldeias Fatulela , Macelihu , Mau-Laku and Mau-Meta are located in the Suco .

politics

economy
Fishing is carried out on the coast. Bamboo traps are lowered into the water on ropes from small boats and left in the sea for ten days before they are lifted. Part of the catch is only sold if there is a surplus.
The boats are often dugout canoes with two outriggers. They consist of a hollowed-out trunk, the sides of which were originally raised with braided palm leaves. Since these rot quickly, attempts are now being made to replace them with wooden planks . Ribs reinforce the interior of the boat.
Culture
Maquili is known for its wood carving skills. Originally they carved dance masks, male and female figures. There were also carvings of mermaids and eels , which are supposed to refer to the creation myth of the island. Christianity influenced these anmist representations. So one began to cover the genitals of the figures with cloths and also to carve Christian motifs. Even today you can find masks on Atauro that hang on trees and are supposed to protect the gardens from thieves. Warriors and dancers also used the masks. Today they find new buyers as souvenirs, as well as small carved boats.
Every year on the last Sunday in June, the fishermen's Klorun Ro festival ( German boat pulling festival ) takes place in Putin Hatin ( German white place ), where new boats are pulled into the water. Because of today's dominant Christianity, the festival is now dedicated to St. Peter ( São Pedro ).
