The Maranaj ( Albanian  Mali i Maranajt ) is a mountain in northern Albania with a height of 1576  m above sea level. A. The prominent pyramid 15 kilometers northeast of Shkodra is the first significant elevation in the southwestern foothills of the Albanian Alps . It rises around 1500 meters east of the plain around the Skadar Lake  , in the south and east it is surrounded by the valley of the Kir , in the north by the valley of the Rrjoll brook .

To the west and north the mountain drops very steeply into the Rrjoll valley. On the south side there are some alpine pastures  and further down permanent settlements. However, the area is only very sparsely inhabited or not at all and still has extensive forest areas. In the east, the summit drops only about 200 meters, then merges into a flatter saddle, which then rises to Maja e Mollës ( 1546  m above sea level ), about two kilometers away , and continues in a ridge that runs northeast to the Center of the Albanian Alps. In the southeast, beyond the Kir,  the Cukali mountain range extends towards the Drin with the mountain of the same name as the highest elevation ( 1722  m above sea level ).

Nopcsa describes the Maraj as "the extreme south-west summit [of a] Mesozoic tablet and the Paleozoic Era below it " ( Franz Nopcsa : Further contributions to the geology of Northern Albania). The top of the mountain consists of Thiton - lime , below even older limestone from the Triassic , also areas with red and gray slate respectively slate.

Summit ascent is possible as a long day tour. In the summit area, however, there are no paths and the terrain is sometimes very steep, even if hardly rocky.
