Marcel Amont (* 1. April 1929 in Bordeaux as Marcel Jean-Pierre Balthazar Miramon ) is a French singer and actor . In his almost 70 year career, he has released 30 albums and more than 1,000 songs in various languages. Amont was one of the most successful musicians in France in the 1950s. In addition to his music career, he can also be seen as an actor in films and television series, for which he also partially contributed the soundtrack.

Life

Marcel Amont was born in 1929 under the name Marcel Jean-Pierre Balthazar Miramon as the son of the railroad worker Modeste Miramon and the nurse Romélie Lamazou in Bordeaux. After attending a concert by Yves Montand in 1948 he made the decision to become a singer himself. Amont made his debut as a musician in Paris in 1951 , where he appeared in various cabarets. In the following years Amont established himself as a singer of chansons and worked with Edith Piaf on their 1956 album Olympia 1956 , which marked his breakthrough. In the same year he made his film actor debut in The Bride Was Far Too Beautiful at the side of Brigitte Bardot , Micheline Presle and Louis Jourdan .

In the 1960s, Amont also appeared increasingly on French television shows. In 1962 he had his greatest success with Le Mexicain , with which he was number one in the French charts for two weeks in June and July. At that time, Amont was one of the most successful singers in France after Charles Aznavour and Gilbert Bécaud . He also performed regularly at the Olympia in Paris. In the following years Amont was able to establish himself as a singer abroad and published albums and individual songs in English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Irish and Spanish. Five of his albums achieved gold status in France.

In the 1970s, Marcel Amont achieved other chart successes in France, including with the single Femme jolie on te yeux , a cover version of Frankie Vallis Can't Take My Eyes Off You rewritten by him . In 1974 he moderated his own television show for a time called Toutankhamont .

In 1980 Amont was shortlisted for the French entry at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Camarade Vigneron . Instead, the band Profil was chosen . In 1991 the singer took a creative break lasting several years before releasing a new album in 2006. Amont is still active as a singer and occasionally as an actor. The latest album Par dessus l'épaule was released on October 12, 2018 and also contains a duet with Charles Aznavour, who died 11 days before the release.

Marcel Amont was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2001. He was married to Tamara Vladimirovna Deiness from 1952 until the divorce in 1959. The couple have three children together. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Amont published his autobiography in April 2019 and performed at the Béarn Festival in Paris in May.

In February 2020, Amont was made an honorary member of the Académie protestante du Béarn in Pau .
