Marcel Fischbach

Marcel Fischbach (born August 22, 1914 in Hollerich , Luxembourg ; † June 27, 1980 ibid) was a Luxembourg journalist , politician of the Chrëschtlech Sozial Vollekspartei (CSV) and diplomat .

Life

After studying economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Marcel Fischbach worked as a journalist and business editor for the daily newspaper Luxemburger Wort from 1939 . In 1941 he completed his doctorate at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Bonn with the dissertation “Necessity for reform of peasant inheritance law in Luxembourg”. He began his political career after the end of the Second World War in local politics and was a member of the Luxembourg City Council between 1945 and 1964. Shortly afterwards he was elected in the 1945 chamber for theChrëschtlech Sozial Vollekspartei (CSV) was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Chambre des Députés ) and, with a short break from 1958 to 1959, also belongs to it until 1964. At the same time he was from 1959 to 1964 as a representative of the Chamber and a member of the European Parliament .

On July 15, 1964, he was appointed Minister for the Middle Class (Ministre des Classes moyennes) and Defense Minister (Ministre de la Force armée) in the Werner-Cravatte government. At the same time he acted between July 15, 1964 and January 3, 1967 as Deputy Foreign Minister (Ministre adjoint aux Affaires étrangères) . His resignation in the course of the reform of the armed forces of Luxembourg led in particular by the chairman of the CSV parliamentary group , Romain Fandel , on January 3, 1967, during which the compulsory military service was abolished and replaced by a professional army that still exists today , triggered a government crisis and led to Reshuffle of the Werner-Cravatte government.

After leaving the government, Fischbach switched to the diplomatic service and was initially accredited as ambassador to Switzerland and Austria between 1967 and 1973 . He then acted as the successor to Lambert Schaus from 1973 to 1977 as ambassador to Belgium and was also permanent representative to NATO in Brussels during this time . Most recently in 1977 he replaced Nicolas Hommel as ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and remained in this post until 1979, when Georges Heisbourg succeeded him.

His son is the lawyer and politician Marc Fischbach , who was also a member of the Chamber and the European Parliament , several times a minister and between 1998 and 2004 a judge at the European Court of Human Rights .
