Marcello Truzzi (born September 6, 1935 in Copenhagen , † February 2, 2003 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American sociologist and lecturer in sociology at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti . He dealt scientifically with the paranormal and borderline scientific topics, with protosciences as well as with the demarcation problem of science and so-called pseudoscience . He is considered a pioneer of modern anomalics .

Truzzi was one of the founders of the American skeptics association CSICOP in 1976 , but after violent controversy during the 1980s - especially in connection with the so-called 'Mars effect controversy' (approx. 1980-1985) around the evaluation of the astrobiological Data from Michel Gauquelin and the disputes about the 'Project Alpha' (approx. 1983–1987) staged by James Randi - again from the organization. He created and popularized the term "pseudoskepticism" to denote an ideology of the 'skeptic movement' that he claimed.

As early as 1978, Truzzi was the editor of the journal "Zetetic Scholar - An Independent Scientific Review of Claims of Anomalies and the Paranormal", in an effort to " initiate an ongoing dialogue between proponents and critics of claims of the paranormal " and " to help the scientific community " to arrive at rational judgments based on empirical facts about such claims . "

The terms 'zetetic' and ' zetetic ' or 'zeteticism' (English: "zetetic" and "zeteticism") he consciously built as an alternative to the terms 'skeptic' and 'skepticism' (English: "skeptic" and " skepticism "), since he viewed the latter terms as discredited due to his ideological differences with the skeptic movement. By a zetetic, he understood a "skeptical seeker". The term is based on the naming of the followers of the ancient Greek skeptic Pyrrhon von Elis .
