Marcelo Falcão
Marcelo Falcão (born August 19, 1983 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian conductor and composer . He specializes in silent film music and is regarded as Europe's only cinema Kapellmeister .
education
Falcão grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied double bass and composition. After completing a bachelor's degree in musicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin , he acquired his first conducting skills in lessons with Alexander Gelovani. After studying contemporary music at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana with Arturo Tamayo, he completed a master's degree in orchestral conducting with merit at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff .
He gained further experience in master classes with Kenneth Kiesler, Colin Metters and Douglas Bostock and conducted, among others, the Russian National Orchestra, the Divertimento Ensemble and the Argovia Philharmonic . He also assisted Catherine Larsen-Maguire, David Jones and Carlo Rizzi in symphonic and operatic productions.
Silent movie
In 2014 Marcelo Falcão conducted several live performances of the classic silent film Berlin - The Symphony of the Big City in Brazil as part of the German-Brazilian Year. He also directed the Brazilian premiere of Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror in São Paulo in 2018 .
Falcão has been chief conductor of the Babylon Orchestra Berlin since it was founded in 2019 . With the ensemble he performed, among others, Metropolis , Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror , Berlin - The Symphony of the Big City , Rosita and Battleship Potemkin . On the occasion of the Morricone Festival at Kino Babylon in summer 2019, he conducted a film music concert with the Babylon Orchestra Berlin in symphonic line-up and choir.
In addition to his work as a conductor, Marcelo Falcão also arranges and composes silent film music. Together with Hans Brandner, he gave the music for Nosferatu and Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari out.
