The starting point and the means are protests against the Monsanto company and its business policy and the aim is to get this company to change its business policy.

history

Tami Canal on the occasion of March Against Monsanto in Salt Lake City , Utah

The idea for the initiative was founded by Tami Canal in response to the failure of a legislative proposal (California Proposition 37, 2012), a voter initiative, which called for mandatory labeling of foods made from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Tami Canal started a very successful social media campaign on February 28, 2013.

The first MAM took place on May 25, 2013. The number of demonstrators present at this first event is uncertain, in some cases numbers of hundreds of thousands up to two million (organizers estimate) were rumored. The first MAM took place in hundreds of cities around the world.

Monsanto was reluctant to respond and it was announced that people's rights to express their views on the matter were respected. However, Monsanto is helping to improve agriculture by enabling farmers to produce more on their land and conserving resources such as water and energy.

Background of the protests

Monsanto is the world's largest producer of genetically modified seeds and business policies in connection with lawsuits and active lobbying have repeatedly caused a stir. There is a suspicion that genetically modified foods can adversely affect human health and genetically modified products are subject to very different bans, restrictions and approval requirements in different countries.
