Marchinus van der Valk

Marchinus Hyminus Arnoldus Leonardus Hendrikus van der Valk (* 1910 ; † January 5, 1992 ) was a Dutch classical philologist and theologian .

Marchinus van der Valk was the son of a Protestant theologian and first completed a degree in Classical Philology at the Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden , which he completed in 1935 with a doctorate based on a dissertation on the Nekyia of Homer's Odyssey . He then completed a second degree in theology . In 1938 he successfully applied for a position as a country pastor in Wijngaarden ( Zuid-Holland ), in 1945 he moved to the municipality of Weert ( Limburg province ) and in 1951 to the village of Rumpt ( Gelderland ). In 1976 he retired. Since 1987 van der Valk has been housed in a retirement home.

Van der Valk mainly worked on the archaic epic Homer ( Iliad and Odyssey) and his textual criticism, but also on the Greek tragedy ( Euripides ). His life's work is the edition of the Commentary on the Iliad by Eustathios , the Archbishop of Thessalonica .

Van der Valk never held an academic position in the field of classical philology, but was supported in his work on the Eustathios Commentary by the Nederlandse Organizatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek .
