Marcial Simoes de Freitas e Costa
Marcial Simões de Freitas e Costa (born July 29, 1891 in Lisbon , Portugal , † December 14, 1944 in Lourenço Marques ) was a Portuguese engineer, architect and businessman.
Life
Simões de Freitas e Costa was one of two sons of the doctor Luís Teodoro de Freitas e Costa from Praia and Maria da Glória Simões de Freitas e Costa from Carvalho . The paternal grandfather was a pharmacist. The family first lived in Lisbon in the Calçada de São Francisco and then moved to the Belém district . Marcial Freitas e Costa visited the Liceu Passos Manuel , which until 1911 was provisionally located on Largo do Carmo . In his youth he played soccer in the school team and at Sport Lisbon and Benfica , but then focused on his academic and professional advancement. Nevertheless, he remained loyal to the club as a footballer.
He completed his military and engineering training at the Escola de Guerra in Lisbon, he was part of the Regimento de Sapadores Mineiros N.º 1 based in Lisbon (today Regimento de Engenharia N.º 1 based in Tancos ). Freitas e Costa received a written acknowledgment for his performance in his training. In 1917, the year of the World War, he joined the expeditionary force . As a pioneer Alferes Engenheiro he was deployed in France and was promoted to lieutenant in March 1918. He returned to Portugal by land in 1919, where he arrived in Lisbon on August 4, 1919. On July 30, 1928 he received the Knightly Order of Avis , was promoted to Capitão in the same year and married. A son emerged from the relationship.
In the 1930s he ran the railways of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). In 1936 he designed the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which was completed in 1944 . In 1943 he was chief engineer of the Society for Ports, Railways and Transport in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique .
