Marco Foscarini (born February 4, 1696 in Venice , † March 31, 1763 in Pontelongo ) was the 117th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1762 to 1763.

family

The Foscarini family had belonged to the patricians of Venice only from the end of the 16th century. Marco Foscarini was one of the Foscarini of S. Stae who owned a palace near the Church of San Stae on the Grand Canal .

Life

Marco Foscarini was born as the second son of the procurator of San Marco Nicolò Foscarini and Eleonora Loredan . His inherited wealth was increased by the inheritance of his relative, the procurator Pietro Foscarini of the Carmini branch, who had bequeathed his fortune to him on the condition that in future he would use the name Foscarini dai Carmini and move to his family palace. The young widow Pietros, Elisabetta Corner , lived in a house with Marco Foscarini. She is said to have chosen Marcos as doge with all possible means and with the use of the family's fortune. Since 1754 Foscarini, who also worked as an author, was a member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence .

The Doge's Office

On May 31, 1762, at the age of 66, he was elected Doge. He fell ill shortly after the election and was sent to the country to recover. The sixteen doctors who looked after him were divided among themselves and recommended different and contradicting therapies, but could not help the sick doge. Marco Foscarini died on March 31, 1763. He was buried in the church of San Stae .

Instead of a fortune, he left debts totaling 250,000 ducats, apparently the result of corruption payments in connection with his doge election.
