Marcus Vettius Latro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Vettius Latro (full name form Marcus Vettius Gai filius Quirina Latro ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD . Through three inscriptions that were found in Thuburbo Maius , individual stations of his career are known. His career is shown in the inscriptions in slightly different versions; in all versions it is shown in ascending order.

At the beginning of his career, Latro took on two religious functions and two civil offices. He was first a priest ( Flemish ) for the deified Augustus ( flamini divi Augusti ) and then a priest ( Sacerdos ) for the Cereres ( sacerdoti Cererum ). This was followed by positions as quinque decuriis adlectus and as Praefectus fabrum .

His military career consisted of the usual tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . First he took over the management of a Cohors I Alpinorum equitata as prefect . With this unit he took part in Trajan's first Dacian war and received the following awards from Trajan: a hasta pura , a corona muralis and a vexillum argenteum . He then became a tribunus militum in the Legio II Adiutrix , which was stationed in the province of Pannonia inferior . The end of his military career formed the command as prefect of the Ala Siliana .

He then held civil offices in the administration. He was first procurator annonae in Ostia and Portus ; this post was associated with an annual income of 60,000 sesterces . This was followed by administrative tasks in the province of Sicilia as well as the governorship as procurator in the provinces of Alpes Cottiae and Mauretania Caesariensis (in that order); the first governorship was associated with an annual income of 100,000 and the second with an annual income of 200,000 sesterces. By military diplomas and another inscription shows that Latro 128-131 governor of Mauretania Caesariensis was.

Latro was enrolled in the Quirina tribe . Two of the inscriptions were made by his freedmen, Marcus Vettius Euthychides and Marcus Vettius Myrinus .

Remarks

  1. There were two units with this designation. John Spaul assigns Latro to the Cohors I Alpinorum (Pannonia, equitata) , Margaret M. Roxan, however, considers the Cohors I Alpinorum (Dacia) to be more likely.
  2. According to Duncan Fishwick, Latro took part in the First Dacian War around 101/102.
  3. According to Duncan Fishwick it was assumed by Hans-Georg Pflaum that the appointment of Latros as governor of Mauretania Caesariensis goes back to a visit to the province by Hadrian in 128. Hadrian probably knew Latro from their time together in Pannonia inferior around 107, when Hadrian was governor of the province and Latro, as tribune of Legio II Adiutrix, was his subordinate.
