Marcus Willis (born October 9, 1990 in Slough ) is a British tennis player .

Career

Marcus Willis started playing tennis at the age of nine and his favorite surfaces are grass and hard courts. He mainly plays on the ITF Future Tour and has so far won five singles and 21 doubles titles.

While Willis mostly failed in the first round of the ATP Challenger Tour tournaments in singles , he was able to record some successes in doubles in 2014. In March he reached the semi-finals in Saint-Brieuc with his doubles partner Lewis Burton , where they lost just under three sets. For Wimbledon he received a wildcard for both the qualification in singles and with his partner Lewis Burton and failed in the first round. At the Challenger in Segovia , Willis and Burton reached the quarter-finals in doubles, where they were subject to the later finalists.

His greatest success so far was reaching the second round at the Wimbledon Championships in 2016 with a 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 4 against Ričardas Berankis . In round two he failed 0: 6, 3: 6, 4: 6 to Roger Federer . He was the lowest-placed player in the tournament with world number 772. This makes him the lowest-placed qualifier in a main field of a Grand Slam tournament to win a game for 28 years.

In addition to his matches on the professional tour, Willis also earns his living as a league player in Germany and France. In Germany, he has been serving in the regional league for the Marienburger Sport Club in Cologne since 2014 .
