Margarete Elisabeth of Leiningen-Westerburg
Margarete Elisabeth von Leiningen-Westerburg (born June 30, 1604 in Schadeck , † August 13, 1667 in Wiesenburg ) was a Countess of Leiningen and regent of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg .
Life
Margarete Elisabeth was the only child from the first marriage of Count Christoph von Leiningen-Westerburg (1575–1635) with Anna Maria Ungnad, Freiin von Weissenwolff (1573–1606). On August 10, 1622, she married Landgrave Friedrich I of Hesse-Homburg in Butzbach . After Margarete Elisabeth had given birth to her second son, the primogeniture order was introduced in the country .
After the death of her husband on May 9, 1638, in the middle of the Thirty Years' War , she reigned over her underage children. The right to regency resulted from the marriage contract concluded in 1622. She asked her brother-in-law Philip III about this task . von Hessen-Butzbach for support. After some hesitation, he agreed to support the children as “Contutor undt mit Vormunder”, but without making formal or even financial commitments. Since Georg II of Hessen-Darmstadt also supported this guardianship, Emperor Ferdinand III. on January 14, 1639, the "tutorium2" so the formal approval. Thereupon Margarete Elisabeth had the Homburg subjects pay homage to herself and the children on June 9, 1639 and then bore the title "Wittib and Guardian" in official documents. In this function she ruled Hessen-Homburg and also completed recesses . The most important was the recess with Georg II of Hessen-Darmstadt on May 18, 1648 in which Wilhelm Christoph transferred office and Bingenheim Castle .
Her youngest son was Friedrich II of Hessen-Homburg , the famous Prince of Homburg .
