Margarete Klopfleisch , née Grossner, (born August 2, 1911 in Dresden ; † November 13, 1982 there ) was a German painter and sculptor .

Life

Grossner was born the daughter of the carpenter Richard Grossner and his wife Sophie, an amateur opera singer. In her youth she helped to support her family financially during the Weimar Republic : She worked as a model in Otto Dix's drawing course at the Dresden Art Academy after she left school at the age of 14.

In 1933 she emigrated to Prague . She was in contact with the anti-fascist scene and became a member of the KPD . During this time she met her future husband Peter Klopfleisch. In Prague she also met the art teacher Käthe Schäffner, a personal friend of Käthe Kollwitz , who took art lessons with her and trained as a sculptor. From 1937 she joined the Oskar Kokoschka Association as a response to what the National Socialists called “ degenerate art ” .

After the Wehrmacht invaded Czechoslovakia , she emigrated to England on March 9, 1939 with the last transport to London . In England she continued her studies with sculpture courses at Reading University with Professor Carter. From 1939 to 1941 she was interned as an emigrant on the Isle of Man . She processed this time in sculptures and paintings (including internment camp Isle of Man , 1941).

During a vacation in Dresden in 1960, she stayed with her daughters in her hometown and worked as a freelancer. She had great difficulties with the recognition of her person as an artist and her artistic work by the communist rulers in the GDR . It was not until 1981 that she was accepted and recognized as a member of the Kulturbund of the GDR. In the same year, the first personal exhibition in the Comenius Gallery in Dresden showed her works under the title Sculptures and Watercolors from September to November. In 1987 most of her work was exhibited at the John Denham Gallery in London. Further presentations of her artwork took place at exhibitions in London, Maidenhead , Cookham , Eton , Glasgow , Windsor and Reading. She created sculptures, small sculptures made of sandstone, wood and other materials as well as watercolors and oil paintings as a painter.
