Margaret of Saxony (1469–1528), Duchess of Braunschweig-Lüneburg

Margaret of Saxony (born August 4, 1469 in Meißen , † December 7, 1528 in Weimar ) was a Saxon princess from the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin and by marriage Duchess of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Life

Margarete was a daughter of the Elector Ernst von Sachsen (1441–1486) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1443–1484), daughter of Duke Albrecht III. from Bayern-Munich . Her brothers were the Saxon electors Friedrich the Wise and John the Constant , her sister the Danish Queen Christine .

Margarete married Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1468-1532) in Celle on February 27, 1487 . Heinrich was sent to the Saxon court when he was 12 years old. Marriage negotiations have presumably taken place since 1469, when Heinrich's father Otto entered into an alliance with Margarete's uncle Wilhelm . The marriage was delayed on the Saxon side until the expansion of the Celle Castle was completed; The office and castle of Celle were assured as personal treasures to Margarete .

Margarete is buried in the city church of St. Peter and Paul in Weimar.
