Margaretinum (2011)

The Margaretinum was the provincial house of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer in Eisenstadt in Burgenland and is now used as a parish center. The building is a listed building .

history

The residential building is the birthplace of the sound poet Joseph Weigl and the anatomist Joseph Hyrtl . The Esterházy house had the building used as a musician's residence and Joseph Haydn held rehearsals for musical performances there. In the course of the conquest of Burgenland in 1921, nine branches of the Order of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer in Burgenland were separated from the former motherhouse in Sopron . At the same time in 1921 the order started a three-class primary school for girls in the building. In 1924, with the approval of the Holy See, the Austrian Province of the Order was founded. Through the mediation of Princess Margarethe Esterházy, the building was taken over in its entirety as the new provincial house and named Margaretinum . In 1933 the foundation stone for a school center was laid with Cardinal Theodor Innitzer , Archbishop of Vienna and Apostolic Administrator for Burgenland, and a provisional secondary school for girls was started in the Margaretinum. In 1934 the Theresianum Eisenstadt opened with a kindergarten, elementary school, secondary school and a one-year household school.

architecture

The former musicians' building and later the school building and order house is a simple two-story building at the beginning of Wiener Straße. On the courtyard side, small wing buildings form the Joseph-Haydn-Platz as a courtyard. The core of the building dates from the 18th century and has been rebuilt several times.
