The Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a monument in Echsheim near Pöttmes .

history

Regular pilgrimages to the miraculous image took place in Echsheim as early as the 15th century . Around 1630, around 100 miraculous signs are documented every year. The believers got engaged not only with animal diseases , but also with diseases according to Echsheim. In 1716 the public announcement of miraculous signs was banned. Pastor Peter Sudor, from 1720 to his death in 1740 in Echsheim, promoted the pilgrimage again, so that pilgrims from Aindling , Bayerdilling , Bonsal , Buch, Ebenried , Gempfing , Haselbach, Holzkirchen, Illdorf , Neukirchen , Oberbaar , Osterzhausen , Pöttmes, Riedheim , Sallach , Schöneberg , Schorn , Stadel , Staudheim , Thierhaupten , Todtenweis , Wächtering and Walda made pilgrimages to Echsheim. In the course of secularization , the pilgrimage came to a standstill. In the very dry summer of 1834, however, it revived in some communities.

Building description

The church has a single nave from 1862 with a flat ceiling and a retracted choir . The choir and the basement of the tower date from the beginning of the 15th century. The interior of the church is neo-Gothic .

Miraculous image

The carved miraculous image in the Visitation of the Virgin dates from the second half of the 15th century. It was probably mutilated by soldiers during the War of the Spanish Succession, and its head and limbs were cut off. At the instigation of Pastor Peter Sudor, the missing parts were added in the following years.
