history

Through the centuries, Bonsal had very different spellings: Bonsalgen (1300), Pansolden (1340), Pansulgen (1428), Pansalgen (1468), Pansail (1498), Ponsall (1570), Ponsail (1580), Ponnsaal (1663), Ponsall (1671), Bonßal (1725) and finally, since 1790, Bonsal . The name is probably derived from a field name, perhaps from Banned Salland . In the local West Central Bavarian dialect, the place is called Bausl .

The oldest landlords of Bonsal were the knights of Strass . In 1310 and 1340 their entire property fell to the Niederschönenfeld Monastery . Other landlords were the Wittelsbacher , the Gumppenberger and the Sandizeller .

The Catholic parish of Sankt Valentin belongs to the parish community Ehekirchen. The church dates partly (choir, tower, part of the southern nave) from the 15th century. In 1909 wall frescoes from the 15th century were discovered, but not exposed because of their poor condition. The high altar with an oil painting of Saint Valentine is from 1650. The carved depiction of Mary's death comes from 1480 and the Lamentation of Christ from 1500.

An old stone cross from the 16th century stands on the southeast edge of the village. It is one of the five objects in the village that are included in the list of monuments .

Until July 1, 1972, the independent municipality of Bonsal belonged to the district of Neuburg an der Donau and then fell with the regional reform in Bavaria to the enlarged district of Neuburg an der Donau, which was given the current name of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen on May 1, 1973 . On January 1, 1975 it was incorporated into the parish Ehekirchen.
