In terms of natural space, it belongs to the Donau-Iller-Lech-Platte , which in turn is part of the Alpine foothills , one of the main natural spatial units in Germany . Together with Reicherstein , Wiesenbach and Kühnhausen , Echsheim forms the so-called Pöttmeser Oberland .

The place is on the district road AIC 28 , which branches off in Wiesenbach from the state road 2047 (from Meitingen to Pöttmes ) and joins the district road AIC 27 from Rain (Lech) to Pöttmes in Reicherstein .

history

It is in Echsheim a -heim-site , that is, the settlement was of Bavaria founded around 600 to 650 AD. In the 13th century (1265) the place was still called Öxheim or Oexheim , which indicates that oxen was kept. Later the place was called Ochßham, Exhaimb and now Echsheim.
Echsheim is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, when the Gempfing noble free Liutger or Leodegar from the Counts of Lechsgemünd-Graisbach handed over his Echsheimer Höfe to the Gempfing Monastery, which he had built shortly before. Both are then incorporated into the St. Walburg monastery in Eichstätt . In 1265, the Counts of Graisbach were enfeoffed by the Bishops of Eichstätt with the Echsheimer Höfe. After 1600 the Bavarian electors in the form of the caste office Rain and the barons von Gumppenberg from Pöttmes appear as Echsheimer landlords .
The Catholic parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary with its subsidiary church Heilig Kreuz in the neighboring village of Reicherstein originally belonged to the parish of Holzheim , but has been independent since 1416 and was incorporated into the Blumenthal Order of the
Teutonic Order . The tower and the choir of the parish church date from 1420, the nave was built in 1862.
Until July 1, 1972 Echsheim belonged as an independent municipality to the district of Neuburg an der Donau and then fell to the district of Aichach-Friedberg with the regional reform in Bavaria , which was called the district of Augsburg-Ost until May 1, 1973 . On January 1, 1978, it was incorporated into the Pöttmes market.
