history

To the north of Handzell there is a jump, presumably of Celtic origin, which was a deposit of the Swedes during the Swedish War. Handzell means the sharp, bad, bitter, busy country . The ending -zell indicates a church foundation. At the beginning of the 14th century, the greater part of Handzell belonged to the Fürstenfeld monastery , which also exercised jurisdiction and owned a court marque. In 1424 the Gumppenbergers acquired the Hofmark.

The Catholic parish of Sankt Maria Magdalena in Handzell is part of the Pöttmes parish community. The church is a fortified church in which people sought refuge in times of war. The districts Mandlach, Sankt Othmar and Sedlbrunn belong to the parish Heilig Kreuz in Gundelsdorf , Au, Dieß and Dießmühle belong to the parish Sankt Peter and Paul in Pöttmes.

Handzell and its districts were an independent municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Aichach until April 1, 1972 and were incorporated into the Pöttmes market as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . On July 1, 1972, Pöttmes and its districts came to the newly founded Swabian district of Aichach-Friedberg, which was called the Augsburg-Ost district until May 1, 1973 .
