The Church of the Assumption of Mary is the Catholic church in Neuhaus , a district of the municipality of Amt Neuhaus in the district of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony . It is a branch church of the parish of St. Mary Queen of St. Rosenkranz based in Bleckede , in the dean's office in Lüneburg. It is the only church located in the former territory of the German Democratic Republic , which today belongs to the Diocese of Hildesheim . The church is named after the Marian Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is located at Kirchstrasse 30.

history

After 1945 the pastoral care district of Neuhaus / Elbe was spun off from the Lüneburg parish of St. Marien . On November 1, 1951, took place Blessing of the newly built church by the Hildesheim Bishop Joseph Godehard making . It belonged to the West German diocese of Hildesheim during the GDR and was the seat of a curate , but was subordinate to the Apostolic Administrator of Schwerin . For a long time the church had its own clergyman, later it was looked after by the priest of the parish Herz Jesu from Lübenheen .

Since 2002 the church belongs to the parish of St. Maria Königin vom St. Rosenkranz in Bleckede, but until January 31, 2003 the pastor from Lübenheen performed pastoral duties in Neuhaus.

Architecture and equipment

The church, which is almost 15 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , as a tower-free nave construction. The large mural on the back wall of the chancel is remarkable ; it dates from the early days of the church and shows the Assumption of Mary into heaven .

Churches of the Hildesheim diocese in the GDR

During the existence of the GDR, six churches on the territory of the GDR belonged to the Diocese of Hildesheim, but were subordinate to Apostolic Administrators residing in the GDR. The church in Neuhaus the administrator in Schwerin, the churches in Blankenburg , Elbingerode , Hasselfelde and Hessen the administrator in Magdeburg, and the church in Niedersachswerfen the administrator of Erfurt and Meiningen.
