Annunciation in Welden
Choir

The Catholic parish church of the Annunciation is located in the market town of Welden in Bavaria . It houses one of the oldest bells in the Augsburg district and, together with the Votive Church of St. Thekla, is one of the most valuable art treasures of the Holzwinkel . It is protected as an architectural monument .

history

Previous construction

The current church was preceded by a Romanesque predecessor, of which the foundations in the choir and tower have been preserved. A donation for the parish church of Welden is documented between 1126 and 1179. In 1206 Ulrich von Welden was buried in the church in front of the high altar. The hamlet of Ehgatten and the newly created village of Reutern have belonged to the parish since the early 14th century . The latter was raised to its own parish in 1865. The church has had an early mass foundation since 1405 .

A Gothic church in the shape of a cross was probably built around 1425. The late Gothic choir that is still in existence was built around 1495. In 1550 four altars were consecrated for the church by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop. In 1555, instead of the Gothic pointed helmet , the church tower was probably the first in today's Augsburg district to have an onion dome . During the Thirty Years War the Swedes ravaged the church and took the pastor hostage. In 1695 the choir received a new ceiling painting on the theme of the Passion of Christ .

New building

In 1723 the tower was raised and the dome was repaired. The interior was redesigned in Baroque style from 1716 to 1723. At the same time, the old nave was demolished and replaced by a new building based on plans by the monastery builder Joseph Schmuzer from Wessobrunn . The tower was integrated into the nave . The upper floors of the tower are from Johann Off. The master carpenter Mathias Kraus made the roof truss from spelled shards .

The interior was restored in 1888 and 1949. In 1959/60 all the altars, the pulpit and the figures were redesigned. In 1974 an external renovation began. The last extensive exterior and roof renovation took place in 2007/08. The costs amounted to around 810,000 euros.

Furnishing

Ceiling frescoes

The large ceiling fresco was created in 1732/33 in piece for 300 guilders. It has a diameter of 13.5 meters and shows the Holy Trinity in the center . The early work of the artist Matthäus Günther , a student of Cosmas Damian Asam , who also created the spandrels and the choir painting, can be seen as the first attempt in Swabia to provide the entire nave ceiling with a single portrait.

Altars and Figures

The high altar was made in 1720 by the Wertingen carpenter Balthasar Amann and a version by Stephan Luidl. The old, reused altar plate from 1406 bears the inscription: "THE ALTAR IS WEIGHT IN THE HE WNSER LIEBEN FRAEN VND DES HAILIGEN KREICZ VND THE HAIN THREE KING UZ OF WELDVON ANNO DM MCCCC VI FRAV FERIENA FROM THE STAIN!" from 1630. The side altars were erected in the church in 1716/20. The altar of the Annunciation shows the figures of St. Maria around 1520 and St. Gabriel around 1620. The Joseph altar shows the figure of St. Joseph from around 1720.

Other equipment

The pulpit is the work of the sculptor Johann Michael Fischer and the carpenter Joseph Joseph Hartmuth, both from Dillingen . The latter also supplied the confessionals in 1768/70 . Consisting of limestone carved baptismal font was built around the 1600th A new organ was consecrated in 1919 and the prospectus of the previous instrument was reused. The old organ donated in 1709 was sold to the Jesuit College in Ellwangen .
