The location and topography of the Augsburg - Western Forests Nature Park, in which the Holzwinkel is marked

The Holzwinkel in the Augsburger Land is a landscape in the northern part of the Augsburg - Western Forests Nature Park .

geography

It is a hilly landscape gently modeled by the Ice Age with a high proportion of forest. The forests are mostly found on the mountain ranges, while the narrow, cultivated valleys, criss-crossed by small bodies of water, rarely have large stands of trees. The highest point is the Stauffenberg at 577 meters. The Holzwinkel has an extension of about 63 km².

location

The Holzwinkel is limited by the Zusamtal in the west, the Schmuttertal in the east and the Streitheimer Forst in the south. To the north the area borders on the district of Dillingen . The Reischenau connects to the south .

Waters

Two third-order bodies of water arise in the Holzwinkel, these are the Laugna and the Biberbach .

places

Communities in the Holzwinkel are Adelsried , Bonstetten , Emersacker , Heretsried and Welden . Places like Altenmünster , Violau , Affaltern and Lützelburg (Gablingen) are not seen today as belonging to the Holzwinkel, but rather as offshoots.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economy and forestry

Forestry has a long tradition in the region that goes back centuries, hence the name Holzwinkel. The proportion of forest in the Holzwinkel was 3,389.43 hectares on January 1, 2010, that is 53.44% of the total area. The Fugger Foundations and the Bavarian State Forests are major forest owners in Holzwinkel . In addition to forestry, craft and trade play a major role in the economy.

Agriculture

The number of agricultural farms and farmers in the Holzwinkel is falling sharply. Instead of food (grain and vegetables), plants for the energy industry (maize, rape, and elephant grass) are increasingly being grown on agricultural land. In Heretsried there are two extensive photovoltaic systems on former agricultural areas. But at least the private keeping of animals, especially horses, enjoys unbroken popularity in all communities.

traffic

The Holzwinkel is made accessible for car traffic by the A 8 Munich-Stuttgart motorway - Adelsried exit - and the state roads 2032, 2034, 2036. Until the Weldenbahn was shut down in 1986, the Holzwinkel also had its own rail connection to Augsburg. Today the Landrat-Dr.-Frey-Radweg leads on the former railway embankment through the Holzwinkel and further east into the Lech Plain (Neusäß), northwards over the border of the district towards Wertingen .

History and culture

The area, which is still densely forested today, has a long history of settlement that goes back to the times of the Celts and Romans . From this early period, however, only earthworks have survived ( Celtic entrenchments near Reutern , Monburg , Emersacker , Celtic graves in Emersacker, Schneeburg near Welden ). Today's localities were created by clearing the forest from the beginning of the second millennium - the names of some places still refer to their origins through clearing: Adelsried , Heretsried , Reutern . At the beginning of the modern era , the Holzwinkel was an important supplier of energy ( charcoal ) and home-made textile goods for the Free Imperial City of Augsburg . In the course of the Thirty Years' War , the population fell sharply, both as a result of the direct effects of the war and the associated crop failures, hunger and epidemics . From the upturn of the following Rococo today still bear witness to numerous important sacred and secular new buildings and interiors that are important in Welden the Thekla Church and the ceiling fresco in the church. In the memoirs of Ludwig Ganghofer , who spent his early childhood and youth in Welden, there are concise descriptions of life in the Holzwinkel before the Second Empire . From the First World War the numerous witness war memorials in the wood angle. The Nazi dictatorship and the aftermath of the Second World War also left behind some, albeit more hidden, traces. B. the hidden subcamp near Horgau or the blown up bunkers of the old ammunition factory west of Emersacker. After 1945 there was a sharp increase in population due to numerous expellees who brought their customs ( Bohemian brass music ) with them to the Holzwinkel. As a result of the strong influx from the 1950s and 60s, the designation of new residential areas and the development of the outskirts increased. Today there is still a lot of residential and commercial construction activity in the Holzwinkel. Numerous commuters , who appreciate both the proximity to the urban centers and the beautiful natural scenery, strike new roots at the foot of the Stauffenberg in Bonstetten and Adelsried or in Welden. The quiet rural wood corner has blossomed into a cultivated, well-developed and therefore attractive location.

Current identity maintenance

The term "wooden angle" for the area has been in use for centuries. It can be found, for example, in the “Memoirs of an Optimist” from the hand of the writer Ludwig Ganghofer, who spent his childhood in Welden. Appreciation of the past, homeland care and love for tradition are deeply rooted in the Holzwinkel. Numerous homeland associations have been dedicated to this task for a long time. More recently, in addition to a revival of pilgrimage , the inter-communal project “Kult (o) ur-Sommer im Holzwinkel” has contributed to promoting the Holzwinkel identity. As part of this project, the Holzwinkel Cycle Path was created in 2010, the Holzwinkel Sculpture Path in 2013 and the Holzwinkel Audio Path in 2014.

Wooden angles as a trademark

In 2011 in had administrative community Welden organized communities Bonstetten , Emersacker , Heretsried and the market Welden and the unified community Adelsried decided the region Holzwinkel under the common image / word mark "Swabian Holzwinkel" to one. The aim was to bundle the tourism side of the entire Holzwinkel and promote the direct marketing of products from the region. After joining forces with the neighboring community of Altenmünster in 2013, they worked together on an “Integrated Rural Development Concept” (ILEK) in order to advance the two regions together. From the old “Schwäbischer Holzwinkel” brand, the new “Holzwinkel Augsburger Land” brand was further developed in 2013 and registered as a protected word / figurative mark with the European Patent Office . The motto for the Holzwinkel comes from Professor Kellner from Günzburg : "Freedom to live".
