Maria-Hilf (Thurndorf (Kirchenthumbach))

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman Catholic Maria-Hilf- Chapel is located in the Thurndorf district of the Upper Palatinate municipality of Kirchenthumbach in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district . It belongs to the "Parish of St. Jakobus Thurndorf", which for historical reasons is part of the Auerbach deanery in the Archdiocese of Bamberg .

The chapel is located at the southern entrance to Thurndorf in the direction of Auerbach . As the date "1717" carved above the portal shows, the chapel was built at the beginning of the 18th century. It is a gable roof building with a segmental arch. It has a ridge turret with an onion hood . The first roof turret was put on in 1902, but was renewed in 2009, whereby the roof turret was newly covered with sheet copper. A newly gilded cross was placed on it after a storm tore down the previous cross.

A special feature of the chapel is a small, carved wooden altar, the center of which is a painting of Mary. It is a copy of the so-called Passau miraculous image , which in turn was made in 1620 as a copy of the miraculous image of Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach the Elder . It shows the Mother of God with 12 stars around her head and surrounded by roses and lilies. According to local tradition, this portrait was brought from Vienna by the Buchfelder family from Thurndorf . Before 1814 the picture hung in the parish church of St. Jacobus next to the Marien Altar.

The chapel was completely renovated in 2017, 300 years after it was built, with the support of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , the Archdiocese of Bamberg and the Bavarian State Foundation.
