Even today the hermitage still belongs to the curate, the last sacristan was Josef Schmiderer, he died in 1944. From 1961 to 1980 the hermitage above the church was converted into an inn.

Origin of name

The name Maria Brettfall could be derived from the Latin super vallem , which means above the valley. The origin of the Latin prae vallum , in front of the wall, is also possible .

The rock on which Maria Brettfall stands consists of Devonian Schwaz dolomite . Maybe the name refers to this one. About 300 meters further to the west and 160 meters lower, the 1,336-meter-long Brettfalltunnel of the Zillertalstraße leads under the mountain.
