Rafael Thaler

Rafael Thaler , also Raphael Thaler or Raffael Thaler (born September 1, 1870 in Innsbruck ; † March 18, 1947 ibid) was an Austrian painter and restorer .

Life

Rafael Thaler was born in Innsbruck as the son of a farmer from Gries am Brenner , who later worked as a foreman at the Südbahngesellschaft . After attending the state trade school in Innsbruck, he did an apprenticeship with Alfons Siber in Hall in Tyrol , and in 1893/94 he studied at the Accademia di belle arti in Venice . In 1896 he settled in Innsbruck and worked as a freelance fresco painter and restorer. He had an apartment and studio at Pradler Strasse 32.

Thaler painted numerous frescoes in the neo-baroque style with influences of the Nazarenes in churches in Tyrol and Vorarlberg , as well as holy graves and cribs . He also created wall paintings on house facades in Innsbruck and the surrounding area, especially in the incorporated suburbs of Wilten , Pradl and Igls . His works also include portraits in oil , later in pastel , drafts for New Years apology cards and copies of works by Franz von Defregger, among others . As a restorer, he was among other things to the renovation of Ambras Castle , Schloss Bruck , Brunico Castle , Castle Tratzberg and Churburg involved. He was awarded a medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. One of his students was Toni Kirchmayr .

Rafael Thaler was first married to Anna Thaler, geb. Vögele, married who died in 1917. In 1919 he married Anna Schoderböck († 1943). The son Heinz Thaler (1901–1965) also became a painter.
