Maria Burgi , née Kienzle (* December 12, 1912 in Ulm ; † March 14, 2017 ) was a German trade unionist and the only honorary member of IG Metall .

Life

Maria Burgi grew up with three younger siblings in the Söflingen district of Ulm in a social democratic family. Her father was a warehouse worker and a member of the Reich Banner , her mother a secretary in the SPD . At the age of 16 she began an apprenticeship as a white seamstress at the Mayser company in Ulm and in 1929 she joined the German Hat Workers' Association . In 1937 she married the commercial clerk Erich Burgi. The couple had two children. While her husband was a prisoner of war from 1940 to 1945 , Maria Burgi took care of the family and the upbringing of the children.

During the Third Reich , she was denounced because she refused to donate to the Nazi women and did not hang up the swastika flag on memorial days. She was threatened with admission to the Oberer Kuhberg concentration camp . With the support of her husband, she managed to survive the Nazi period without imprisonment.

After the war , she helped rebuild the Mayser company as a worker. She joined the Textile Clothing Union and was a works councilor and works council chairwoman for many years until she retired in 1976. In 1982 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

She worked for Mayser until her retirement, most recently as a felt maker . Throughout her life she was involved outside of her business, for example in the district women's committee of the German Trade Union Federation , in the local SPD and in the working group of social democratic women , in the workers' welfare organization and in the SSV Ulm in 1846 . For her 80-year-old union membership, she was made the only honorary member in Germany by IG Metall at the age of 97.
