María Conchita Alonso (born June 29, 1957 in Cienfuegos , Cuba ) is an American actress and singer of Cuban descent.

Life and accomplishments

Alonso's parents, Ricardo Alonso and Conchita Bustillo, moved to Venezuela when she was five years old. She grew up in Caracas . She was named Miss Teenager of the World in 1971 and Miss Venezuela in 1975 . She starred in several films and television series produced in Venezuela. In 1982 she moved to the United States.

As a member of the music group Ámbar since 1979 and as a freelance singer since 1982, Alonso received three nominations for the Grammy Award .

The first US-produced film with Alonso was the comedy Moscow in New York (1984), in which she starred alongside Robin Williams . In the thriller Running Man (1987) she played on the side of Arnold Schwarzenegger . In the drama The Haunted House (1993) she appeared alongside Meryl Streep , Glenn Close , Jeremy Irons , Winona Ryder and Antonio Banderas .

For the role in the thriller Caught (1996) Alonso was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1997. She won the 1999 ALMA Award for her role in the television drama Im Netz der Dunkelheit (1998) .

Alonso received US citizenship in October 2005.
