Bloodsport - The Red Canvas (OT: The Red Canvas , alternative title: The Art of Submission , Blood Fighter ) is an American martial arts film from 2009. Directed by Adam Boster and Kenneth Chamitoff .

action

Johnny Sanchez tried to become a professional fighter years ago and fell out with his father, who runs a small workshop. After a misstep, he ends up in prison, where he competes in illegal martial arts fights under Director Harbin Rask. Rask has big plans for the boy as he should win the Krang Red Canvas Tournament for him. Rask had to compete in the tournament as a prisoner of war in the Vietnam War and was permanently drugged, so that he still has a score to settle with Krang.

Rask dismisses Sanchez, who is supposed to train beforehand. Sanchez is toying with the idea of dropping the deal. But when his father's workshop is robbed and Sanchez's father almost dies, the company depends on the money. And really, Sanchez wins the preliminary rounds and gets to compete against Champion Torch. Torch, a fighting machine that is also under the influence of drugs, is not an easy opponent. But in the end Sanchez succeeds in defeating the giant and forcing him to give up.

background

Director and screenwriter Kenneth Chamitoff came up with the idea for the film when he was taking pictures of martial arts fights, especially in the MMA environment, as part of his work as a photographer . He was inspired by various martial arts films in Bellingham , Washington , and wrote a first screenplay. He began filming in Palmdale , California . The initially narrow budget of 50,000 US dollars grew to 4.5 million through the investment of various martial arts schools. Chamitoff then brought Adam Boster into the team. The film was filmed at the time of the major UFC breakthrough, but it wasn't released in the United States until September 2013. It premiered in San Jose, California. However, a German-language version has existed since 2009 and had a DVD premiere in Germany. The German distribution title refers to the film Bloodsport . However, there are no other connections to this series.

Ernie Reyes Jr. celebrated his first successes as a child actor , including in Red Sonja and the television series SideKicks - Karate Kid & Co. He was also seen in the first two Turtles films. Bloodsport - The Red Canvas is his first adult lead role. His father in the film is actually played by his real father, Ernie Reyes Sr., stunt performer and combat choreographer. His siblings Lee Reyes, Ki Reyes and Destiny Reyes also star in the film.

criticism

Bloodsport - The Red Canvas is one of a series of films that the New York Times refers to as Fightsploitation, based on the exploitation film genre . They tried to appeal to MMA audiences with these films. The zenith of commercial success was passed by the time the film was finished. Filmstarts.de rated the film as very bad:

“The German distributor of the direct-to-DVD publication“ Bloodsport - The Red Canvas ”was therefore very resourceful when it attempted to at least give the hideous work a superficial attraction value by means of a misleading title. After the first five minutes at the latest, however, it is clear that “The Red Canvas” marks an absolute low point in the kickboxing genre and that it really falls off the Van Damme original. The directorial debutants Kenneth Chamitoff and Adam Boster fail across the board - even with the best will in the world, there is really nothing positive to be gained from their crude B-movie. (...) The story is lousy, the action scenes are mild. The directors Kenneth Chamitoff and Adam Boster then give their work the fatal blow through the complete absence of any technical skills. The pictures look like from a telenovela, the cast is more than bad and the music is not worth mentioning. Almost every shot breaks off too early and the recordings are cut so bumpily that even the layman has to notice: There were bunglers at work. "
