Maria Küchler-Flury

Maria Küchler-Flury (* 26. January 1941 in Stans , heimatberechtigt in Stans and core) is a Christian Democratic politician, first councilor and first woman Landammann the Swiss canton of Obwalden .

Life and politics

Maria Flury, daughter of Balz Flury, parish clerk, and Anna née Niederberger, housewife, attended the compulsory schools in Stans from 1948 to 1955. 1955–1956 she completed a language stay in French-speaking countries . 1957–1961 Flury trained to be a primary school teacher at the teachers' college in Menzingen . Between 1961 and 1966 she worked as a teacher in Sarnen , interrupted in 1964 by a language stay in England. In 1965 she married the trustee Werner Kuchler, who later Christian Democratic mayor of Sarnen (1978-1979) and Obwalden Cantonal(1974–1989, President 1988–1989). After the birth of the second of four children, she headed administration and staff in her husband's trustee office from 1968–1992. In addition, Küchler-Flury and her husband set up the Sarnen copy center from 1973.

At the end of the 1970s, Küchler-Flury joined the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP), was a member of the Obwalden Educational Council from 1986 to 1992 and of the Sarnen Auditing Commission from 1989 to 1992. 1990–1992 she was a member of the Cantonal Council. In 1992, she was the first woman in the canton of Obwalden to be elected to the government council, where she headed the trade and welfare department (since 1999 the department of economics). During her tenure as a member of the government, the establishment of the economic development and the regional employment agency as well as the reorganization of the canton hospital fell . In her last two years in office, 2003-2004, Küchler-Flury was also the first woman to hold the office of Landammannamt in the canton of Obwalden.

Maria Küchler-Flury was already active in various non-profit women's associations before her reign . She was active on the board of the Citizens' Association of Catholic Swiss Women, whose goals included the civic education of women, as well as in the Catholic Women's Association in Obwalden , in the Sarnen women's community and in the Obwalden social fund for mothers and families in need.

During her reign, Küchler-Flury was ex officio board member of Academia Engelberg and Tourismus Zentralschweiz, among others . She also got involved on a voluntary basis, for example, from 2002–2012, she chaired the Association for Vocational Training CVT Myanmar, which runs a vocational school in Myanmar , and co-founded the Alzheimer's Association Obwalden-Nidwalden, of which she was co-president from 2006–2015.
