The cantonal hospital Obwalden has 63 beds, all in single and double rooms in the new bed wing of the acute hospital that went into operation in 2014. In 2016, over 4,000 inpatients were treated for the first time and 40,200 outpatient consultations were carried out. The hospital has around 500 employees, making it 57th on the list of the largest employers in Central Switzerland.

history

Already in 1525 a Spittel was officially guaranteed on the Spitalmatte in Sarnen. There the poor and needy were treated. In 1850, the canton parliament decided to replace the Spittel with a new hospital and penal institution. For the opening of the new hospital on January 22, 1856, the Sisters from the Heiligkreuz , today's Ingenbohlerinnen, came to Sarnen to take care of the patients. An expansion was planned from 1897 and opened in 1911. Between 1954 and 1956 the hospital was expanded again. In 1972, the new hospital law brought, among other things, a change to the chief physician system: chief physicians were hired for the first time against the opposition of general practitioners and took over the hospital operations. In 1996, a new treatment wing was completed for 40 million francs and the psychiatric clinic was opened.

In March 2012, the people of Obwalden approved the conversion and replacement of the bed wing for 40.4 million francs in a vote with 87.4% of the votes. The new building with 63 inpatient beds was built between August 2012 and May 2014.

Cooperations

The Obwalden Cantonal Hospital works together with the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital as the central hospital . There is a cooperation with the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich for the treatment of orthopedic patients. The collaboration with the Cantonal Hospital Nidwalden , which began in the early 2000s , was gradually terminated by mid-2015.

Until the end of 2016, the Psychiatry Clinic, founded in 1997 for the patients of Obwalden and Nidwalden, was run by the Obwalden Cantonal Hospital. As part of an optimized care concept for the three cantons of Lucerne, Obwalden and Nidwalden, this was transferred to Lucerne Psychiatry (Lups) on January 1, 2017 . Since then, Lups has continued to operate in Sarnen to the same extent as before. There is a close cooperation between KSOW and Lups in various areas.
