Maria Ribeiro Gomes Martins (born July 9, 1999 in Moçarria , Santarém district , Portugal ) is a Portuguese cyclist who competes in races on the road and track . In 2019 she became the first female athlete in her country to win a medal at the European Elite Track Championships.

Athletic career

In 2016 Maria Martins became Portuguese junior champion in the individual time trial and won the silver medal in scratch at the junior European championships . The following year she won the national junior titles in both disciplines on the road.

In the following years, Martins was particularly successful internationally on the track and won several national titles on the track. In 2017 she became vice-European junior champion in the eliminations . In 2018 she was third in the scratch at the U23 European Championships . In 2019, she won bronze at the European Track Championships in scratch and became the first Portuguese cyclist to win a medal at the European Elite Track Championships. In the points race she finished fifth in the elimination races Seventh and Omnium eighth.
