Marianne Hengl (born January 22, 1964 in Saalfelden , Salzburg) is a disabled activist and book author. She is the chairwoman of the RollOn Austria association - We are disabled .

Life

Hengl was born with a stiffened joint in all four limbs and was admitted to the Salzburg Clinic for seven months after the birth . The reason for their disability is a genetic defect ( arthrogryposis multiplex congenita ). Before she could start school, she had to undergo a painful operation on both arms in Hermagor (Carinthia) to improve the mobility of both limbs. When she got her first wheelchair, she first realized what it means to be disabled. She started school in the Elisabethinum in Innsbruck, later the support center for disabled children moved to Axams , Tyrol.

After her school education in the Elisabethinum Axams (elementary school, secondary school and polytechnical course), she found a job in the same institution in 1980 in the social services of the Capuchins . Initially she worked full time as a secretary for many years and later in public relations and fundraising. Since 1989 she has been organizing barrier-free trips in the Tyrolean state travel agency - in a marginal employment relationship.

She married at the age of 30 and has lived in Axams , Tyrol since then .

RollOn Austria

In 1989 Hengl became chairwoman of the Association for the Promotion of Disabled People. Today this non-profit organization is called RollOn Austria - “We are disabled”. Your sphere of activity now extends to all of Austria. The association has set itself the goal of supporting people with disabilities and bringing about a rethink in society through events, campaigns and television programs. In 2014 the association had around 400 members and around 200 sponsors.

Television broadcast

The ORF television format “ Summit Victory : The Will Moves Mountains”, which was launched by Marianne Hengl in 2012, is one of the most important projects of RollOn Austria and has been running extremely successfully on ORF III - “Culture and Information”: The The show is produced by Barbara Stöckl , KIWI-TV. Two people are presented in strong human portraits "at eye level" who have made difficult and ambitious periods of life into a personal "summit victory" in a wide variety of ways. For a severely disabled person, a “peak victory” can be to get out of the bathtub independently and without outside help after three years or to suddenly be able to write a word with a crooked hand after months of practicing.

Radio show standing up

The radio show Stehaufmenschen goes back to an initiative by Marianne Hengl, who runs the show together with ORF presenter Rainer Perle. In the program, extraordinary life paths are discussed and guests who have suffered strokes of fate are interviewed.

The Natasha jewel

For the 25th anniversary of RollOn Austria, the “Natasha” pendent was created in cooperation with the D. Swarovski company in the shape of an angel with only one wing. At the point where the second wing is missing and the handicap becomes visible, crystals are attached as a sign that handicapped people are pieces of jewelry and just as valuable as all other people. The piece of jewelry can be worn as a sign of solidarity with disabled people.

Encouraging tour / cabaret

Marianne Hengl is touring the country with her friend Zuhal Soyhan and the presenter Antonio La Regina on the “Mutmacher Tour” entitled “Weird Birds - Disabled with a Whistle” .
