Claus-Günther Budelmann

Claus-Günther Budelmann (born December 13, 1944 in Hamburg ) is a German banker . From 1988 to 2008 he was a German private banker at Berenberg Bank , where he was spokesman for the shareholders and from 2007 to 2015 British honorary consul in Hamburg.

Life and professional history

Claus-Günther Budelmann was born in Hamburg as the fourth son of Professor Günther Budelmann , who later became the Medical Director of the General Hospital Hamburg-Harburg, and grew up in Hamburg-Eppendorf . In his youth he played tennis and hockey in the club on the Alster . After graduating from high school, he began an apprenticeship as a banker in his bank in 1965 due to a friendship between his father and Heinrich von Berenberg-Gossler (1907–1997), who was the managing partner of the then Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co. KG . In 1968 he went to London for Berenberg , where he discovered, according to his own admission, "his love for everything British". After returning from England, Heinrich von Berenberg-Gossler made Budelmann the general representative of the bank in 1981 . In 1988 he finally became a partner and co-owner of Berenberg Bank and headed the company as spokesman for the partners until he retired in 2008.

Volunteering

In 1980 Budelmann joined the Hamburg Anglo-German Club and in 1997, after the death of his sponsor Heinrich von Berenberg-Gossler, took over the office of president, which he still holds today. In 2004 he was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elisabeth II . In March 2004 Budelmann first became Honorary Consul of Luxembourg . When the British Consulate General on Harvesterhuder Weg closed on September 29, 2006, the British Ambassador in Berlin, Sir Peter Torry Budelmann, asked whether he would like to work as the British Honorary Consul in Hamburg. Budelmann then gave up the honorary consulate of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and performed this function for the British Kingdom from 2007 to 2015. In 2014 he received the Officer's Cross of the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” (OBE) from the British Ambassador Sir Simon McDonald.

Budelmann was treasurer and vice chairman of the Club an der Alster for 20 years and was also a member and deputy chairman of the Rickmers Group's advisory board until December 31, 2014 for almost 20 years . He is u. a. Member of the Board of Trustees of the Hamburger Theater Festival Foundation, member of the Board of Trustees of the Hagenbeck Foundation and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Giftedness.

Claus-Günther Budelmann is married and has one son.
