Hamburg Theater Festival

The Hamburger Theater Festival is a theater festival founded in Hamburg in 2009, which is financed without public funds and exclusively through donations from Hamburg citizens, foundations and companies and through the income from ticket sales. Every year, much-discussed theater productions from all over the German-speaking area are invited to the festival to present themselves to the Hamburg audience. The performances appear in the Deutsches Schauspielhaus , the Thalia Theater , Kampnagel and the St. Pauli Theater , but also in other special venues such as the Hamburg State Opera or the construction site of the Elbphilharmonie . The First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher , is the patron of the Hamburg Theater Festival.

The director of the Hamburg Theater Festival is Nikolaus Besch, who, together with Harald Ruhnke, is also the initiator of the festival. The sponsor is the private and non-profit foundation Hamburger Theater Festival, whose aim is to accompany Hamburg on its further path to a cultural metropolis and festival city and to promote the theater. The chairman of the board of trustees is the Hamburg shipowner Ernst P. Komrowski. Other members of the foundation's board of trustees include Claus-Günther Budelmann , Klaus von Dohnanyi , Giovanni di Lorenzo , Harald Vogelsang, Ian K. Karan , Manfred Lahnstein , Inga Maren Otto and Franz Günter Wolf.

The festival academy

In 2010, in the second year of the festival, there was an academy accompanying the Hamburg Theater Festival for the first time as a joint project with the Theater Academy of the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . This autumn academy is funded by the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius . Students of the Theaterakademie Hamburg and the interested public have the opportunity to get to know artists, directors and actors away from the stage at workshops, lectures and discussions. In 2010 u. a. The actors Peter Jordan , Martin Wuttke , Jappe Claes, Ernst Stötzner , Thomas Thieme and Angela Winkler will be won. Some of the lectures and discussions were open to the public, the workshop program was aimed exclusively at the students of the theater academy.

In 2012 the festival academy was opened by Wim Wenders . His lecture and an in-depth colloquium were reflections on the topic of »Film View - Theater View«. In addition, the religious and cultural scientist Michael von Brück reported on his research on religion and art. There was also a colloquium for his lecture "Rituals - From Cult to Theater". For students of the Theater Academy of the University of Music and Theater, exclusive workshops and discussions took place as part of the lessons, including a directing workshop with David Bösch and an acting workshop with Alexander Khuon .

2013, the fifth year. there were lectures, discussions, readings and conversations with the actress Caroline Peters , the writer, director and actress Emine Sevgi Özdamar and the actor André Jung .

The main focus of the 2014 Festival Academy was dance theater. In addition to the production of Tauberbach by Belgian choreographer Alain Platel , discussions, lectures and workshops with students from the Theater Academy of the University of Music and Theater and the Hamburg audience took place.

For the first time in the seventh year of the 2015 festival, there were introductory events for almost all productions with the respective director or the responsible dramaturge, some moderated by cultural journalists from the Hamburger Abendblatt . In addition, lectures and colloquia were held on the topic of »power - ohmic power«, which defines the festival. A focus of workshops and seminars for the students of the theater academy was on music theater in general and the production of Jephtha , a scenic oratorio by Georg Friedrich Handel and directed by Lydia Steier, in particular.

The series of talks, Zündstoffe , has existed since 2016 , in which well-known personalities rub against each other in conversations on various topics on the stage of the St. Pauli Theater .

Exhibition "Time goes with masks"

From October 7th to December 11th, 2011, an exhibition of the work of theater make-up artist Wolfgang Utzt was shown in the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg to accompany the 3rd Hamburg Theater Festival . Wolfgang Utzt has worked with important directors for almost three decades, including Benno Besson , Friedo Solter , Alexander Lang , Thomas Langhoff , Heiner Müller , Robert Wilson , Jürgen Gosch and Frank Castorf . His masks for many productions at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and other theaters have made German-German theater history. The Neuhardenberg Castle Foundation , in cooperation with the Berlin City Museum Foundation , showed various masks as well as sketches, figurines and examples of Wolfgang Utzt's make-up techniques.
