Mariano Fernández Amunátegui (born April 21, 1945 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean journalist , diplomat and politician .

biography

After studying law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile , he entered the diplomatic service in 1967 and found his first assignment abroad in 1969. Between 1971 and 1973 he worked as third secretary at the embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany . After the overthrow of the government of President Salvador Allende and the subsequent military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet , he remained in exile in Germany until 1982 . During this time he worked as a journalist for various newspapers and also completed postgraduate studies in social sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . Later he was editor of the magazine "Desarrollo y Cooperación" and the news agency "IPS Third World News Agency" as well as editor-in-chief of the "Handbook of Development Aid".

After the start of the return to democracy based on the 1980 Constitution , he returned to Chile in 1982 and became a co-founder and member of the Executive Committee of the Study Center for Development Aid (Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo) until 1990. He was also a member of the board of directors of "Radio Cooperativa", president of the Institute for Relations between Europe and Latin America (Instituto de Relaciones Europa-Latinoamérica) and honorary member of the Chilean Society for Political Sciences (Asociación de Ciencia Política de Chile).

After Pinochet was voted out of office and Patricio Aylwin was elected as the new president, he returned to the diplomatic service in 1990 and was appointed permanent representative to the European Union . He was then Ambassador to Italy between 1992 and 1994 and as such also Vice President of the Italy-Latin American Institute (Instituto Ítalo-Latinoamericano). He then returned to Chile and was Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2000.

In 2000 he was appointed Ambassador to Spain and subsequently from 2002 to 2006 Ambassador to Great Britain . From July 2006 to March 12, 2009 he was ambassador to the USA and since September 2014 he has been ambassador to Germany .

On March 12, 2009, he was named Secretary of State by President Michelle Bachelet . On the sidelines of President Bachelet's state visit to the United States in June 2009, he and the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agreed to expand US-Chilean cooperation.

Minister Fernández, who is an excellent expert on viticulture in Chile , is also a titular member of the International Wine Academy and Honorary President of the Association of Sommeliers of Chile.

Alfredo Moreno became his successor as Foreign Minister on March 11, 2010 .
