Mariano Roque Alonso is a town and district in the Central Department in Paraguay with 101,700 inhabitants. It lies on the Paraguay River and borders Asunción . The country's largest trade fair, the Expo MRA, takes place here every year .

history

The city was founded on October 27, 1927. To this end, 700 hectares of land were expropriated from Liebig's Extract of Meat Company owned by the German agrochemist Justus von Liebig . The company had owned land in Paraguay on which it raised cattle since 1898. It was named after consul Mariano Roque Alonso , who visited the place frequently. On August 30, 1945, the city was elevated to a district.

economy

The city's economy is based on trade - several large shopping centers have settled on the Ruta Transchaco - the Fenix port , the textile industry and fishing. The Texcin textile factory, founded in 2015, is a prime example of Paraguay's high economic growth of 6% annually. Initially, with 50 workers, it produced 50,000 items of clothing per month, in 2017 the number of employees rose to 400 and production to 300,000 items per month, all of which are intended for the Brazilian market.

Around 500 companies from 24 countries take part in the 15-day international agricultural and industrial trade fair Expo MRA .
