Gaston Boissier (full name Marie-Louis-Antoine-Gaston Boissier , born August 15, 1823 in Nîmes , † June 10, 1908 in Viroflay ) was a French ancient historian and classical philologist .

Life

Boissier developed an interest in archeology and epigraphy early on . He studied philology at the École normal supérieure in Paris and then taught as a professor of rhetoric at the high school in Angoulême . He later moved to Paris, first to the Lycée Charlemagne , then to the École normal superieure and finally in 1869 as a professor of Latin poetry at the Collège de France . In 1885 he switched to the chair for the history of Latin literature, which he held until 1906.

Boissier was one of the most important classical scholars of his time. His studies of Roman literature and history, including several standard works, were received all over the world and earned him rich recognition. In 1876 he was appointed to the Académie française , where he served as permanent secretary from 1895 . From 1882 he was a full foreign member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences , from 1886 a full member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and from 1894 a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg . In 1904 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He was in contact with many researchers at home and abroad, including Theodor Mommsen in particular .
