biography

Hackfeld was the daughter of the ship owner Carl Friedrich Pflüger. In 1848 she married the captain and shipowner Hinrich Hackfeld (1816–1887). The couple, nephew BF Ehlers and brother-in-law Johann Pflüger drove to Hawaii in 1848 with the Brigantine Wilhelmine they had bought . Her company founded there in Honolulu made a. a. profitable business through overseas business, sugar cane plantations and whaling. In 1850, they also opened a shop in Honolulu. The company, Hackfeld & Co, General Commission Agents and Ship Chandlers since 1853 , became one of the largest in the still independent Kingdom of Hawaii . In 1861 Pflüger received half of the business share. The German / American sugar manufacturer Claus Spreckels ("Sugar King" of Hawaii) and other American businessmen gained ever greater influence on business in Hawaii. Therefore, the couple withdrew, first to Hamburg and in 1871 to Bremen. Both founded a company here at Langenstrasse 131. The nephew Johann Friedrich Hackfeld also ran the business of Hackfeld & Co. Ltd in Hawaii until 1917.

The marriage was childless. In 1887, after the death of her husband, Marie Hackfeld and her nephew founded the Hackfeld'schen Marien-Schulfond in 1888 to support pupils from poor backgrounds. She now appeared as a patron in other areas.
