Marie Howet

Marie-Françoise Celine Howet (born March 24, 1897 in Libramont-Chevigny , † March 24, 1984 in Rochehaut ) was a Belgian illustrator and painter of Expressionism .

Life

Marie-Françoise Celine Howet was a daughter of the pediatrician Constant Howet and his wife Pauline Thiry. She first studied music at the École d'Arlon in Arlon . But soon she showed more interest in painting. Accompanied by his mother, Howet went to Brussels in 1912 to study with Constant Montald at the renowned Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles .

She received numerous awards in her first year, but after the outbreak of World War I her family fled to France. In 1915 Howet enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . This made her one of the women in art who enjoyed the same training as men.

After the war she returned to Belgium and founded her first studio in Rochehaut, near Bouillon . She later moved to Saint-Gilles . In 1922, the only 25-year-old Howet won the Prix de Rome and a multi-year artists - scholarship to stay in Rome . In the following years she often traveled abroad, including Greece , Turkey , France and Italy .
